IBM is pleased to see the UK government making progress on its plans to develop a pro-innovation approach to AI regulation. Like similar approaches in Singapore and Japan, this new white paper recognises that regulators are best equipped to mitigate the risks of AI when they can leverage their domain-specific expertise – rather than rely on a new regulatory body with the insurmountable task of developing one-size-fits-all, economy-wide rules for AI.
Starting from a principles-based approach allows existing regulators to ensure AI is deployed safely and responsibly. It empowers them to evaluate the wide variety of different AI use-cases in their respective sectors with nuance and precision and will make the UK regulatory environment more innovation-friendly.
